It operates independently under a law passed by the Parliament, encompassing both Doordarshan Television broadcasting and Akashvani (formerly All India Radio). Before this, these were part of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The Prasar Bharati Act, granting autonomy, was passed in 1990 but only enacted on September 15, 1997.
