About TNPSC (Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission)
The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) is a government department in Tamil Nadu responsible for recruiting personnel into the state's public service. It evolved from the Madras Service Commission, established by an Act of the Madras Legislature in 1929, making it the first Provincial Public Service Commission in India.
The commission adopted its current name in 1970 and operates under Articles 315 to 323 of Part XIV of the Constitution of India. In 1923, the Indian Government set up a Public Service Commission to review the salary structure of the Indian Civil Service and consider transferring some duties to provincial services.
This commission, chaired by Viscount Lee of Fareham, included five Englishmen and four Indians. It also addressed the pace of Indianisation in the Indian Civil Service and the Indian Police, setting targets for achieving 50% Indian membership in the Indian Civil Service within 15 years and the Indian Police within 25 years.
