About the High Court of Himachal Pradesh
The formation of Himachal Pradesh occurred on April 15, 1948, through the amalgamation of twenty-six Provinces and four Punjab hill States into a Centrally Administered Area.
The Himachal Pradesh (Courts) Order, 1948, enacted by the Central Government on August 15, 1948, established the Court of Judicial Commissioner for the region, located at "Harvingtan" in Shimla. Endowed with the powers of a High Court under the Judicial Commissioner's Court Act, of 1950, this court commenced operations on August 15, 1948.
Subsequently, the Delhi High Court Act of 1966 extended its jurisdiction to the Union Territory of Himachal Pradesh from May 1, 1967, replacing the Court of Judicial Commissioner with the Himachal Bench of Delhi High Court, situated in Shimla's old High Court building, known as "Revenswood."
Finally, the State of Himachal Pradesh Act, passed by Parliament on December 18, 1970, led to the establishment of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on January 25, 1971, headquartered at "Revenswood" in Shimla, with one Chief Justice and two Judges.
