About the High Court of Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Pradesh was formed by integrating twenty-six Provinces and four Punjab hill States into a Centrally Administered Area on 15 April 1948. The Central Government issued the Himachal Pradesh (Courts) Order, 1948, on 15 August 1948.
According to Paragraph 3 of this Order, the Court of Judicial Commissioner was established for Himachal Pradesh, located at "Harvingtan" (Kelston area, Bharari, Shimla). It was endowed with the powers of a High Court under the Judicial Commissioner's Court Act, of 1950.
In 1966, the Government of India enacted the Delhi High Court Act, extending its jurisdiction to the Union Territory of Himachal Pradesh from 1 May 1967. This replaced the Court of Judicial Commissioner with the Himachal Bench of Delhi High Court, situated at Shimla in the old High Court building known as "Revenswood." On 18 December 1970, the Parliament passed the State of Himachal Pradesh Act, establishing the new state on 25 January 1971 and creating its own High Court with headquarters at "Revenswood" Shimla, presided over by one Hon'ble Chief Justice and two Hon'ble Judges.
