About - Food Safety and Standards Authority of India
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a statutory body operating under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It is responsible for regulating the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import of food products, as well as establishing standards to ensure food safety.
The FSSAI was established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, of 2006, which consolidated all previous laws and regulations related to food safety that were managed by various ministries and departments.
Headquartered in New Delhi, the FSSAI has four regional offices located in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. The authority oversees 22 referral laboratories, 72 State/UT laboratories across India, and 112 NABL-accredited private laboratories.
The FSSAI is led by a non-executive chairperson, appointed by the central government, who holds or has held a position of not below the rank of Secretary to the Government of India. Sudhansh Pant currently serves as the chairperson, and Ganji Kamala V. Rao is the chief executive officer. The enforcement of FSSAI regulations is carried out by Food Safety Officers.
